Much like a rock band releasing a previously unissued track from a long-ago album, Crowned Heads is going back to its roots and bringing out a cigar that almost became its first release.

When Crowned Heads was collaborating with inaugural Four Kicks cigar line in 2011, there were three final blends in contention. The first two blends—favored by Crowned Heads’ principals Jon Huber and Mike Conder—were made with Ecuador Habano wrapper. The third version—favored by Perez-Carrillo—had an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper and a slightly different filler blend than the others. Perez-Carrillo told Huber and Conder that it was ultimately their decision, and one of the two Habano versions won out, becoming Four Kicks.

Now, Crowned Heads and Perez-Carrillo are going back to that old blend that Perez-Carrillo originally preferred all those years ago for a new cigar that will be called Four Kicks Capa Especial.

“While we’ve produced numerous brands and many sought-after limited editions over the past nine years, Four Kicks will always hold a special place in my heart,” Huber told Cigar Aficionado. “It was our first brand, our first partnership with Ernie, and has truly stood the test of time within our portfolio. To have the chance to turn back the clock, do a redux on the blend, and bring to market what was Ernie’s vision for the original blend is special to us all on many levels.”

The cigars are being rolled at Perez-Carrillo’s original Four Kicks has a different wrapper (Ecuador Habano), and the binder and filler are all Nicaraguan.

Both brands are rolled triple capped. The cigars will be available in three sizes: Robusto, measuring 5 inches by 50 ring gauge; Corona Gorda, 5 5/8 by 46; and Sublime, 6 by 54. The cigars will come in boxes of 24, with suggested retail prices of $8.65 to $9.95 per cigar. Huber said there may be a fourth size that will be available to attendees of the PCA trade show.

Four Kicks Capa Especial is scheduled to ship this spring, but the pandemic is likely to delay the release. La Alianza, presently shut down due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
